Louise Dowkes

Counsellor for children, young people and Adults (Ages 7 to older adults)

“Bachelor of Arts in Counselling and Therapeutic Practice”

About me

My name is Louise, I am passionate about my work as a counsellor. I am a Pluralistic integrative counsellor, which means I work according to a school of therapy that is designed to allow us to work together to find the best way of addressing your hopes in therapy. In a nutshell, this means I use ideas and methods from various therapeutic modalities and your life experience. The therapeutic modalities I may use include Person-Centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Strength Based Therapy, Trauma, Bereavement Counselling, Mindfulness and Life Coaching to name but a few.

I work relationally and aim for you or your child to feel safe enough to share difficult feelings, in a space that offers you compassion, and a sense of human connection and understanding. I work visually by stepping into our creative side however, if being creative is not something that feels comfortable, then we can use the traditional talking method. Shared decision-making forms part of the therapeutic process and I will always check in with you or your child to see if your or their needs are being met.

“At different times, different therapy approaches are likely to be helpful for different individuals”.

We can discuss the reasons why you've chosen to seek counselling for yourself or your child during the initial appointment, and we can collaboratively talk through if I am the right person for you or your child.

I have more than 20 years of experience working with children and young people, and before becoming a counsellor, I spent a significant amount of time working in the field of mental health and emotional well-being.

I have experience working with families and children who have lost their homes through no fault of their own. I have worked with people from age 7 through to 90 years old, who may present with depression, anxiety, stress, loss/grief, low confidence, low self-esteem, eating disorders, trauma, and anger issues, and have supported survivors of domestic abuse and childhood sexual abuse. I am trained to work face-to-face, online and over the telephone. I have worked for LGBT as an online counsellor and also as a school-based counsellor. I am currently enrolling on a MA in play therapy at the University of South Wales so I can work with children of a younger age.

Cost: £55.00 per session.
